A general talk like this obviously reflects the work of a great many people; I can't claim credit for any of the ideas here myself. I'd like to thank a few of those who first shared this material with me.

Jeff Harvey is my thesis advisor. David Kutasov was the professor who taught the class on string theory where I first saw much of this material; in that course, we used Polchinski's textbooks on the subject. Green, Schwarz, and Witten also wrote a pair of excellent textbooks. And the ARCS Foundation has provided me with important financial support for several years.

Finally, I should probably add a word of thanks to the creators of the POV-Ray raytracing program, which I used to create all of the figures appearing on these slides. (The slides themselves were created with a painfully old version of Corel Office's Powerpoint clone; I don't recommend using a program that old by any vendor, but it was the best I had at the time.)
